Soundwave 2014 kicks off in Australia this weekend, starting in Brisbane, and here at AFENDS we thought we would give our top 5 staff picks of the bands were stoked to see (in no particular order).
1. Eagles Of Death Metal
Just when you thought it was safe to take your ladyfriends out again, EAGLES OF DEATH METAL are perched and ready to swoop in. The band has already toured their mustaches off, but the road once more beckons and the people have spoken... there will be more Eagles for the masses soon!
Check out their song I Want You So Hard.
PENNYWISE were founded in the South Bay region of Los Angeles during the late eighties. The area has a prominent place in popular culture, with upstart groups like Black Flag, The Circle Jerks and Descendants merging a fast rebellious sound with the surrounding aggressive surf and skate culture. Inspired by their predecessors, PENNYWISE were at the forefront of a second wave of American punk rock that would catapult the movement from a tight nit subculture into a world wide movement.
Check our their song Bro Hymn.
3. The Porkers
From their beginnings in Newcastle in 1987, THE PORKERS have brought their wall of noise to festival stages around the globe. With a syncopated rhythm section and a fat brass sound they were at the spearhead of the worldwide 3rd Wave of Ska in the late 90s. Not just the skanky Jamaican rhythm, but a melting pot of deeper reggae, fused with funk, punk rock and metal riffs, - and sometimes all in the same song! Simply ad beer to this overly energetic stage show and what you have is the party starter band, renown and revered by fans and musos alike.
Check our their song Swinging Like Tiger Woods.
4. Rob Zombie
A rock icon and auteur filmmaker with insight and unlimited vision, ROB ZOMBIE has continuously challenged audiences as he stretches the boundaries of music, film, and publishing. Now, the seven-time Grammy-nominated recording artist releases his fifth solo album, Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor.
Check out his song Dead City Radio And The New Gods Of Supertown.
5. I Killed The Prom Queen
The next phase in the life of Australia’s foremost purveyors of modern-day metalcore has begun. With the imminent release of their much-anticipated third album, Beloved, I KILLED THE PROM QUEEN are primed for a relaunch of epic proportions. “We’re back and stronger than ever,” warns guitarist and mainstay, Jona Weinhofen.
Check out their song Thirty One & Sevens.
